Morocco Photo Adventure Vacations – Inspire, Create and Learn.

King Hassan II (1929-1999) once described Morocco as a country whose roots lie in Africa but whose leaves breathe in European air. Morocco’s rich history, multicultural population and varied geography make it a fascinating country. It’s villages and cities offer a striking contrast of ancient kasbahs, mosques and souks and modern architecture, with a mix of Berber, Arab and African peoples. The Atlas mountains run like a spine from southwest to northwest, separating the cities from the desert. Its architecture spans from the Almoravid, Almohad, Merinid and Saadian civilizations (11th -17th centuries), to the Alaouites (17th century to present day). The cities of Fez, Rabat and Marrakech and High Atlas offer photographers a variety of culture, color, architecture and nature. And the Medina’s in Fez and Marrakech are both UNESCO World Heritage sites.

This adventure is designed not only to guide you to the most photogenic locations carefully planned for the best light, but to aid you in mentally visualizing a scene before capturing the decisive moment. Our aim is to raise your awareness and spark your creativity so that you not only go home with images to be proud of, but use your new found skills to improve and expand your photographic technique in general. Apart from the technical aspect of learning your camera settings and capabilities, you will learn how to turn an ordinary image into an extraordinary image by using your own creativity.

In addition, you will become knowledgeable on how to survey the landscape, utilize and approach your environment, photograph people indigenous to the region and the cultural considerations and challenges of photographing in a foreign country. Our week together will include individual and group discussions, inspiring ideas and great fun. We cannot think of a better location to express your creativity than the exotic nature of Morocco!

Day 1 | Fes

We meet in the morning at our hotel in Fez. Over our first Moroccan mint tea we will discuss PWA’s “10 Guiding Principles of Photography” and our “THE ART OF SEEING” photographic technique, as well as an informal discussion on what the guests are trying to achieve in their photography, subject matters, styles and techniques. We will explore the magnificent Imperial City of Fez, one of the largest medieval settlements of the world. We will have a local guide accompany us as we wander though its labyrinth-like Medina. Getting lost in its more than 9000 streets and alleys is part of the fun, and will give us the chance to experience this amazing open air museum. In the evening we will enjoy our “Welcome Dinner” at one of our favorite Moroccan restaurants. (D)

Day 2 | Fes - Chefchaouen (the Blue City)

On day two we depart early for a day trip to Chefchaouen (better known as the Blue City). Chefchaouen, or Chaouen for short, is known for its electric blue rinse that covers not just it’s houses, but it’s mosques and many of the buildings in the city. The custom dates back to the 15th century, when Jewish refugees fleeing the Spanish Inquisition settled here. They brought with them their tradition of painting things blue to mirror the sky and remind them of god. We will spend the day exploring this magnificent city perched high in the Rif Mountains. The photographic opportunities are endless. In the late afternoon we will return to Fes. (B)

Day 3 | Fes - Volubilis - Mulay Idris

On day three after an early breakfast we will head out of Fes to the Ancient Roman ruins of Volubilis where we will spend the morning visiting the best preserved roman archeological site in Morocco. Extensive remains of its fine buildings survive surrounded by a fertile agricultural area covering over 40 ha. Our second stop will be at the sacred town of Mulay Idris, one of the most important pilgrimage centers of Morocco. Here we will have lunch. After we will head back to Fes where we will photograph its street life, various colorful souks and squares, the beautiful stucco and wood carvings of the 14th century Bou Inania Madrasa and the mosaics that cover the Nejjarine Fountain among other interesting places, without forgetting a visit to the Chouwara Tanneries. What a wonderful day to be a photographer. (B)

Day 4 | Fes - Marrakech

On day four we go wander the empty streets of Fes early in the morning before dawn as the city awakes and comes to life, this will give us the chance to view a different side of the city and make for some great photographic opportunities. After breakfast we will take a morning train from Fes to Marrakech. During our train ride we will have time to rest, enjoy the view, edit and review our shots, do some photo critique, share editing tips and answer questions. After freshening up at our Riad in Marrakech we will head to the lively Jemaa el-Fna square, where we will have dinner at one of the terraced restaurants overlooking the square and spend the evening applying our skills to the many photographic opportunities under low light conditions. (B)

Day 5 | Marrakech

On our first day in Marrakech we will circle the Koutubia Mosque, wander through the Medina, a maze of narrow alleys and souks lined with market stalls and craftspeople, where we can spend our dihrams and capture the colorful chaos. We will step into magnificent sultans palaces, tiled courtyards and ancient mosaic covered graves. You will find endless photographic opportunities around every bend because after all Marrakech is a photographic paradise and a delight to the senses. (B)

Day 6 | Marrakech

On day six we will explore more of the magnificent city of Marrakech including the Bab Khemis flea market, where one can find anything from old shoes to decorative doors. After a morning of photography, we will have lunch in the Medina and discuss photography. In the afternoon you will have the option of enjoying a hammmam before dinner or continue discovering the hidden marvels of the city. (B)

Day 7 | Marrakech - Essaouira

For those who feel like getting up early, we will have a last morning stroll through the streets of the Medina to see how the city awakes. After breakfast we will drive to to the city of Essaouira, on the Atlantic coast. We will venture into its white washed Medina streets, sprinkled with blue doors and windows, and enjoy the richness of its architecture and its decorations, a mixture of a Moroccan and European styles. We will walk to the lively fishing port and stroll along the Portuguese city walls and explore the technical difficulties of low light photography as we photograph a beautiful Atlantic sunset. (B)

Day 8 | Essaouira - Safi - Al Jadida

In the morning we will have the chance to photograph the sunrise over the rooftops of Essaouira from the rooftop of the Riad. After breakfast we will drive along the coast line on our way to Al Jadida and enjoy and extraordinary landscapes and photographic opportunities along the way. We’ll enjoy lunch in Safi, where we will have the chance to see the impressive and intact walls that surround the medina with a strong Portuguese influence, and catch a glimpse of the enchanting and incomplete Cathedrale Portugaise, the Portuguese Cathedral. After lunch we will continue driving along the coast to our Riad in Al Jadida. Here we will visit the 16th century fortified Portuguese colony, an  outstanding example of the interchange of influences between European and Moroccan cultures, well reflected in architecture, technology, and town planning. The surviving Portuguese buildings include the cistern and the Church of the Assumption, built in the Manueline style of late Gothic architecture. We'll have time to freshen up and prepare for our wonderful “Farewell Dinner", with great fun and laughter as we discuss all the highlights of the trip. (B) (D)

Day 9 | Al Jadida - Casablanca

On day nine, we conduct our final group discussion, review our past weeks photos, trade contact information, and check out before we drive back to Casablanca and bid you farewell. We urge you to extend your stay in Morocco and make good use of everything you will learn on our photo adventure. (B)

May all who come as guests... leave as friends®
