Be prepared for a heart-and-soul seduction in Provence.

Our 7-day highly curated small-group Provence Photo Tour is truly spectacular. The South of France is drenched with character, probably due to its turbulent history with the Romans, Phoenicians, Greeks, and nomadic tribes dating as far back as 300,000 BC. The rocky heights of the Maritime Alps lie in tiers, tumbling down to the Riviera’s dramatic coast. On its bluffs, perched villages keep a watchful eye on the distant blue sea. Its rural architecture and colorful, untamed beaches almost beg to be photographed. They say, when it comes to Provence, be prepared for a heart-and-soul seduction.

This iconic wedge of glittering coast is a mountain retreat, Roman temple, and gastronomic art de vivre. Traveling through Provence means sensual sauntering past scented lavender fields and chestnut forests; through fresh apple-green vineyards and silvery olive groves; around markets, Matisse-designed chapels, and medieval hilltop villages impossibly perched on rocky crags. Provence is an old-fashioned love affair that never dies.

We begin in the coastal city of Nice, where the vibrant streets of the Old Town and the sweeping views from Castle Hill provide the perfect introduction to the French Riviera’s charm. The journey continues to the medieval hilltop village of Èze, a dreamlike setting of narrow stone streets and lush gardens overlooking the Mediterranean. Just a short drive away, Saint-Paul de Vence offers an artistic retreat, with its golden-hued alleyways, charming galleries, and picturesque squares that have inspired generations of painters and photographers.

From the Riviera, the tour moves inland to Cannes for an early morning shoot along La Croisette and the historic Le Suquet district, where fishing boats and luxury yachts share the harbor. A scenic drive through Provence’s rolling countryside leads to Avignon, home to the majestic Palais des Papes and the legendary Pont d’Avignon, both bathed in stunning golden-hour light. The nearby village of Gordes, perched dramatically on a hillside, provides breathtaking panoramic shots, while a visit to the ancient Sénanque Abbey offers an iconic scene of stone architecture nestled among lavender fields.

The lavender-filled landscapes of Sault are a photographer’s paradise, with endless fields stretching towards the horizon, especially in summer when the purple hues contrast beautifully against the golden light. After exploring the charming streets and markets of Carpentras, we’ll spend a day in Arles, home to the prominent Rencontres d’Arles, an annual summer photography festival established in 1970. Finally, our journey continues to the vibrant city of Marseille. Here, the bustling Vieux Port, the hilltop basilica of Notre-Dame de la Garde, and the colorful, graffiti-lined streets of Le Panier, offer dynamic and diverse photographic opportunities.

With expert guidance and a small group setting, this tour balances structured shoots with time to explore and capture Provence’s beauty at your own pace. From the Riviera’s coastal elegance to the lavender-scented countryside and the energy of Marseille’s port, each location offers a unique atmosphere and a wealth of photographic inspiration. Whether focusing on landscapes, street photography, or architectural details, this journey through Provence promises a rich and immersive experience, blending iconic landmarks with hidden gems off the beaten path.

Note: You can combine this tour with our legendary “White Horses of the Camargue” Photo Tour – 4 days.

ITINERARY

PROVENCE PHOTO TOUR – 7 DAYS

Day 1 | Marseille

We’ll meet in the lobby of our Marseille hotel for introductions and an overview of the exciting days ahead. Then, our photographic journey will begin in France’s oldest city, Marseille, founded around 600 BC. For over two millennia, Marseille’s prime coastal location has made it a hub for trade, first with the ancient Greeks, and later with the Romans. Today, the city still revolves around the Vieux Port, where colorful fishing boats sway gently beside bustling markets, and shimmering reflections dance across the water, a dream for photographers seeking vibrant maritime scenes.

Rising above the city, the Notre-Dame de la Garde basilica offers sweeping panoramas that are perfect for wide-angle captures of Marseille’s stunning blend of old-world charm and contemporary energy. In Le Panier, Marseille’s oldest district, we’ll wander through narrow, winding streets lined with pastel façades, striking street art, and hidden cafés, finding endless opportunities to photograph authentic Mediterranean life.

We’ll close the day with a “Welcome Dinner” at one of our favorite restaurants overlooking the Old Port, the perfect backdrop for good conversation, delicious Provençal cuisine, and a taste of the French Riviera’s magic. (D)

Day 2 | Marseille – Avignon

We’ll begin our morning immersed in one of Marseille’s most authentic traditions — the daily outdoor fish market at the Vieux Port. Here, fishermen proudly display the morning’s catch on weathered tables as gulls circle overhead and the scent of the sea lingers in the air. The characters here are as photogenic as the scene itself, with their sun-worn faces, animated gestures, and warm banter offering wonderful opportunities for candid portraits. Many are happy to share tales of their fishing adventures, and their personality shines through each frame you capture.

After savoring these moments and the soft Mediterranean light, we’ll bid farewell to Marseille and journey inland toward the heart of Provence. The road to Avignon will take us through a landscape painted in earthy ochres, with cypress-lined lanes and vineyards stretching toward distant hills, scenes that have inspired artists from Van Gogh to Cézanne, and now, you.

By early afternoon, we will arrive in Avignon, our home base for the next three days. Steeped in history and crowned by the majestic Palais des Papes, the largest Gothic palace in the world, Avignon’s medieval walls, cobblestone streets, and stately squares create a timeless setting for photography. Once the seat of the Papacy in the 14th century, the city carries an old-world grandeur while still humming with Provençal charm.

After checking into our hotel, we’ll set out to explore with cameras in hand. The warm glow of late afternoon light casts golden tones across ancient stone facades, while narrow lanes reveal intimate details: ivy-covered doorways, timeworn shutters, and locals enjoying a glass of wine at sidewalk cafés. From the banks of the Rhône, the view toward the Pont Saint-Bénézet, the famous medieval bridge that stops mid-river, offers a perfect composition, especially as the sun dips low and the sky turns shades of pink and lavender.

As evening settles over Avignon, we’ll pause to absorb the rhythm of life here — slower, gentler, and deeply connected to the land. Tomorrow, the surrounding countryside of Provence awaits, but for tonight, we’ll savor the magic of this historic city. (B)

Day 3 | Avignon – L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue – Venasque – Carpentras

In the morning, we’ll set off to discover some of Provence’s most photogenic towns, each offering its own unique character and charm. Our first stop will be L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, often called the Venice of Provence. The town is a graceful weave of narrow streets, gently flowing canals, and moss-covered waterwheels turning slowly in the Sorgue River. Known for its vibrant antiques market and elegant boutiques, it’s a place where rustic Provençal charm meets refined artistry. The morning light filtering through plane trees will cast soft reflections on the water, creating perfect compositions for both color and black-and-white photography. Here, textures will abound, from worn wooden shutters and ornate iron balconies to colorful displays of fresh flowers and vintage treasures in shop windows.

From there, we’ll travel into the heart of the Vaucluse to one of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France: Venasque. Perched dramatically atop a rocky promontory, this medieval jewel will feel far removed from the modern world. The sweeping views over vineyards, cherry orchards, and the distant Dentelles de Montmirail will be breathtaking, especially under the expansive Provençal sky. The ancient stone ramparts and narrow lanes will reveal centuries-old doorways, weathered walls, and intimate corners that invite quiet, contemplative photography. Venasque’s layered history, from prehistoric cave dwellers to medieval defenders, will lend the town an almost timeless atmosphere.

In the afternoon, we’ll make our way to Carpentras, a city rich in art, history, and vibrant Provençal life. Once part of the Papal States, Carpentras was favored by the Avignon popes and is infused with Italian influence seen in its architecture and urban design. Elegant facades, ornate fountains, and charming squares will provide an endless variety of photo subjects. The city is also notable for its Jewish heritage; the 14th-century synagogue, the oldest in France, stands as a testament to a community protected by papal decree. As we’ll wander the bustling streets, we will capture the interplay between grand historical elements and the everyday rhythms of local life.

By late afternoon, we will return back to Avignon with our memory cards filled with images that tell the layered story of Provence, from river towns and medieval fortresses to papal cities steeped in art and tradition. (B)

Day 4 | Avignon – Roussillon – Gordes

We’ll begin the morning in Avignon, taking advantage of the soft, cinematic light that bathes the city before the streets fully awaken. The warm glow of the early sun brushes the ancient stone walls, casting long shadows across cobblestone streets, perfect for moody, atmospheric compositions.

Leaving Avignon, we’ll journey deep into the Provencal countryside, where the air is perfumed with lavender and rosemary, and rolling hills are dotted with vineyards, olive groves, and sun-baked farmhouses. It’s a photographer’s dream with textures, colors, and light that shift with every turn of the road.

Our first stop will be Roussillon. It is one of the most colorful villages in all of France. Perched high on a hill and framed by deep green pine forests, Roussillon is an artist’s palette come to life. The ochre cliffs, painted in shades of red, orange, and gold, seem to glow under the midday sun. Winding streets lined with shuttered houses in complementary warm tones create countless compositions for both wide shots and intimate details. The interplay of color and texture here is truly unique, making it a must for both landscape and street photography.

In the afternoon, we’ll continue to Gordes, one of France’s most iconic hilltop villages. Before reaching the heart of the village, we’ll visit the Abbaye de Sénanque, a 12th-century Cistercian abbey set against a spectacular backdrop of violet lavender fields. When the lavender is in bloom, it’s one of Provence’s most magical sights; a symphony of color and scent beneath ancient stone walls. The abbey’s symmetry, combined with the softness of the fields, offers opportunities for both grand, sweeping images, and more delicate, detail-rich compositions.

As the sun begins its golden descent, we’ll photograph Gordes itself, with its stone houses cascading down the hillside and catching the warm evening light. From certain vantage points, the village looks as if it has grown organically from the rock, a timeless vision of Provence. (B)

Day 5 | Avignon – Sault – Moustiers-Sainte-Marie – Valensole

In the morning, we’ll leave Avignon and journey east into the heart of lavender country, where the scent of summer seems to float permanently in the air. Our first destination will be Sault, an ancient fortified village perched high on a ridge, offering sweeping views across a vast valley carpeted with lavender fields. From this vantage point, the neat rows of purple stretch into the horizon, broken only by the occasional stone farmhouse or cypress-lined path. Below, a graceful multi-arched bridge spans the tiny La Croc stream; a picturesque scene that begs to be photographed from every angle. The weathered stone façades of Sault’s centuries-old houses, bathed in warm Provençal light, make for timeless images of rural France. We’ll pause here for a relaxed lunch in the village, enjoying local specialties in a setting where history, nature, and charm blend seamlessly.

From Sault, we’ll wind our way toward Moustiers-Sainte-Marie, a village so enchanting that it feels as though it belongs in a fairy tale. Nestled between dramatic limestone cliffs, Moustiers is famous for its pastel-toned houses, narrow cobbled streets, and the golden star suspended high above the village by a chain; a mystery steeped in legend. Here, the surrounding Parc Naturel Régional du Verdon offers a rich variety of landscapes and wildlife, from soaring vultures to nimble mountain goats. The rugged backdrop of the cliffs combined with the gentle charm of the village provides endless compositions for landscape and architectural photography.

As the afternoon light turns golden, we will make our way to the Valensole Plateau, the very heart of Provence’s lavender kingdom. In summer, the fields here are a sea of vibrant purple, their intoxicating fragrance carried by the warm breeze. The soft, sloping lines of the lavender rows create natural leading lines, guiding your lens toward distant farmhouses or the soft blues of the mountains beyond. Every moment here will bring opportunities to capture wide panoramic views or to focus in on the delicate detail of a single lavender blossom.

We will end the day by checking into our charming hotel in Valensole, where the village streets are lined with boutiques selling lavender-infused soaps, essential oils, and artisanal candles. As night falls, the quiet hum of the countryside is the perfect prelude to another day of discovery and photography in Provence. (B)

Day 6 | Valensole – Arles – Marseille

We’ll begin our day by leaving the lavender heartland of Valensole, our senses still filled with the scent of purple blooms. Our journey will take us to Arles, a city where history, art, and photography converge in extraordinary harmony. Known internationally for its thriving photography culture, Arles is home to the world-famous Rencontres d’Arles festival, a celebration of visual storytelling that transforms the city each summer into an open-air museum of inspiration. Here, galleries, historic buildings, and even ancient ruins become backdrops for world-class exhibitions, workshops, and night projections, making the entire city a living canvas.

But Arles is more than just a hub for contemporary art. It is a place where centuries of history meet the golden light of Provence. Roman treasures like the grand amphitheater and haunting ruins speak of an ancient world, their weathered stone offering textures and shadows that beg to be photographed. Its winding cobblestone lanes, splashed with pastel façades and adorned with colorful shutters, invite candid street photography at every turn. Local markets burst with Provençal life, featuring sun-kissed produce, handmade crafts, and the warmth of friendly vendors.

Arles is also forever entwined with the legacy of Vincent van Gogh, who found inspiration in its luminous skies and painted more than 300 works here. Standing in places he immortalized such as the vibrant Café Van Gogh or the tranquil Rhône riverbank, you can almost feel his presence and see the world through his eyes.

After a full day immersing ourselves in this unique blend of photography, history, and art, we will return to Marseille for our final evening together. Later that night, we will gather for a fabulous “Farewell Dinner”, raising our glasses to new friendships, unforgettable images, and the countless stories we’ll carry home. With great laughter and heartfelt reflection, we’ll relive the highlights of our journey through Provence and the Côte d’Azur; already dreaming of where our cameras will take us next. (B) (D)

Day 7 | Marseille

Over breakfast, we will gather for our final group discussion and photo review. We’ll share our favorite images, memorable moments, and the stories behind them. This will be a time to reflect on the journey we’ve shared during seven days of discovery, artistry, and connection in the South of France. After warm goodbyes, guests will depart from Marseille, taking home both their photographs and the friendships made along the way. (B)

For those joining us for the 4-day Camargue extension, the adventure will continue. After breakfast, we will set off for this remarkable region, where wild horses, pink flamingos, and vast salt flats await. This new chapter will offer fresh inspiration and unforgettable sights.

Day 1 | Marseilles - Aigues-Mortes - Camargue

Our adventure will begin in the vibrant port city of Marseilles. If you are continuing on from either our Côte d’Azur Photo Tour or Provence Photo Tour, you will continue with the group.

In the morning, we’ll leave Marseille and head west toward the medieval gem of Aigues-Mortes. Nestled on the edge of the Camargue National Park, this charming town stands at the meeting point of the Mediterranean Sea and the Rhône River. Its imposing city walls and ancient gates, relics of Crusader and Knights Templar history, create a dramatic backdrop for photography that blends history with natural beauty.

We’ll enjoy lunch in Aigues-Mortes and check in to our hotel. After lunch, we’ll start exploring Aigues-Mortes and the Camargue region. Our day will close with a “Welcome Dinner”, where we’ll share stories and prepare for the rich photographic experiences ahead. (D)

Day 2 | Bulls of Camargue - Park Orthologique du Pont de Gau

Our morning will begin with an exclusive photoshoot of the powerful Camargue bulls inside a private enclosure, giving us controlled lighting and composition opportunities. These iconic animals are closely tied to the region’s unique tradition of the “Course Camarguaise,” a form of bloodless bullfighting. Their muscular bodies, textured hides, and spirited presence make them compelling and dynamic subjects, and are perfect for developing your skills in capturing animal expression and strength.

As the harsh midday light softens, we will transition to the peaceful surroundings of the Park Ornithologique du Pont de Gau. This bird sanctuary is a paradise for wildlife photographers, with abundant opportunities to photograph flamingos, herons, and other wetland species. From tight telephoto shots that reveal delicate feather details to wide-angle vistas capturing birds in graceful flight, this natural haven invites you to explore varied photographic techniques in an ever-changing environment.

The day will offer a captivating mix of powerful animal portraits and peaceful birdlife. This contrast provides a full range of photographic experiences. Together, they will deepen your appreciation of Camargue’s unique natural beauty and rich wildlife diversity. (B)

Day 3 | White Horses of Camargue - Aigues-Mortes Saltworks - Flamingos

We will rise early to greet the dawn light as it paints the Camargue’s marshes and beaches with soft, golden hues. Our first photographic mission will be to capture the wild white Camargue horses in motion, running through shallow waters as the sun rises. This dynamic scene invites creative experimentation, from freezing the powerful, fluid movements with fast shutter speeds to crafting artistic blur and panning shots that convey the horses’ energy and grace. Tracking autofocus techniques will be your best friend for the day as you capture these untamed spirits against a breathtaking natural backdrop.

Later, we’ll explore the famed pink waters of the Aigues-Mortes saltworks, where centuries-old salt production continues amid stunning reflections of the medieval city walls. The interplay of vivid colors, geometric salt ponds, and historic architecture offers endless composition possibilities, especially during the glowing afternoon golden hour. The Camargue wetlands are alive with birdlife, and we’ll seek out elegant flamingos and other avian residents, adding vibrant pops of color and life to our portfolio. In the evening, we’ll celebrate with a wonderful “Farewell Dinner”. (B) (D)

Day 4 | Aigues-Mortes - Marseilles

On our final morning, we’ll greet the soft light as it gently illuminates the medieval walls, gates, and towers of Aigues-Mortes. The early hours offer a serene and magical atmosphere, perfect for capturing the historic town bathed in warm, golden hues and quiet reflections. We will stroll through the narrow streets and photograph the interplay of light and shadow against the centuries-old stonework, rich textures, and timeless beauty.

After breakfast and check out, we will journey back to Marseilles, reflecting on the unforgettable moments and images gathered over the past days. This will mark the end of our Camargue Photo Tour, but the memories and photographs you carry will continue to inspire. (B)
