PHOTOGRAPHY ADVENTURE VACATIONS

Rioja Wine Country

Laguardia, Haro, Ezcaray, Monasteries, Cebollera Natural Park

SPAIN
Rioja Wine Country Photo Adventure Vacations – Inspire, Create and Learn.

Rioja is simply breathtakingly beautiful. Sometimes called “the Tuscany of Spain”, it contains some of the most lovely landscapes in all of Spain. Though well-known for it’s delicious wines, Rioja has a lot more to offer besides wine. Mixed lands of orchards, vineyards, semi deserts and rivers create a striking contrast to  the height of the Iberian Range Mountains, make this a truly unique place to visit.

While it is true to say this region is small, occupying approximately one percent of Spain, it’s potential for making a lasting  impression could not be greater. It has excellent examples of almost all of nature's wonders and a great diversity of climates and structural formations converge here. The result is an intensity of life forms that enable us to view the principal ecosystems of the various habitats of the Iberian peninsula. It’s historical sites make up  a substantial part of this famed wine region. The majestic Yuso Monastery is a good example, and this sacred site has within it’s walls the first  Spanish words ever written.  Of the 209 monasteries in Spain, only 7 are truly significant, and the Yuso monastery in Rioja is listed in that group.

Men have been worked  the land for many centuries and today beautiful Rioja is the result of all that hard work by Riojans. Today, Rioja is in fashion; best wine, best food, nature, camino and people makes fall in love very easily. And the best of all is that all of these diverse landscapes are found within miles of one another.

In other words Rioja has a concentration of beauty around the whole region, from the famous vineyards to the natural and historical riches. All these riches flow down from the tops of the Sierra de la Demanda  mountain range to the multicolor slopes of vines and villages and stops right at the banks of the Ebro river.  All of it is waiting for you to discover and enjoy!

This adventure is designed not only to guide you to the most photogenic locations carefully planned for the best light, but to aid you in mentally visualizing a scene before capturing the decisive moment. Our aim is to raise your awareness and spark your creativity so that you not only go home with images to be proud of, but use your new found skills to improve and expand your photographic technique in general. Apart from the technical aspect of learning your camera settings and capabilities, you will learn how to turn an ordinary image into an extraordinary image by using your own creativity.

In addition, you will become knowledgeable on how to survey the landscape, utilize and approach your environment, photograph people indigenous to the region and the cultural considerations and challenges of photographing in a foreign country. Our week together will include individual and group discussions, inspiring ideas and great fun. We cannot think of a better location to express your creativity than Rioja, Spain!

RIOJA 6 DAYS

Sunday (1)  Laguardia

We meet our guests at our hotel on Sunday morning, where we will discuss PWA’s “10 Guiding Principles of Photography” as well as our “THE ART OF SEEING” photographic technique. After lunch we move to the Rioja balcony in the Cantabria mountains. Here we take the first wide angle pictures of the majestic views. In the evening we celebrate with our “Welcome Dinner” at one of our favorite Spanish restaurants. (D)

Monday (2)  Haro - Wineries - Vineyards - Oja Valley

On Monday we will focus on the Haro and Rioja Alta area - it’s vineyard landscapes and villages. Haro is the capital of Rioja wine so we start with visits to it’s legendary wineries. Old but elegant architecture makes them some of the most important wineries in the world. Here we will try two of it’s famed wines and of course take some photos from the outside and the inside. After lunch our group goes to the Demanda Mountain Range. San Lorenzo peak and  surrounding mountains are some of the highest peaks of the Iberian Mountain Range (2271 mountains). We will drive up Oja river to the picturesque valley that gives its name to Rioja. We visit the Ezcaray mountain village and it’s well preserved traditional architecture. In the evening we check-in to our hotel in Haro. (B)

Tuesday (3)  Hot Air Balloon - Yuso and Suso Monasteries

On Tuesday we start out early with a hot air balloon ride above the beautiful vineyards and villages of Rioja Alta. Stunning views from the air will give us good chances for amazing and unusual shots. After lunch we will drive towards Cardenas river - this picturesque valley contains some of Rioja’s jewels. To see these we will drive towards the Demanda Mountain Range to photograph the hidden Monasteries of Yuso and Suso, a unique UNESCO Heritage Site surrounding by mixed forests of pine, oak, and beech. If we have enough time and weather is suitable we can drive or walk the valley up to mountain tops along a snaky road and take amazing beech forest pictures. Afterwards we drive back to our hotel in Haro. (B)

Wednesday (4)  Cebollera Natural Park

On Wednesday we head off towards Cebollera Natural Park and the beautiful walk to it’s cascades. Here we will try the soft and silky effects of long exposure photography on the Iregua river waters. Colorful ancient birch and pine forest will be our cover on our walk. We will also visit Villoslada village, the hidden Lomos de Orios chapel and Venta de Piqueras chapel and restaurant, all of them inside the park. (B)

Thursday (5)  Cidacos Valley - Biosphere Reserve

On day five we get up early and travel down to Rioja Baja. Here we will visit some areas included in the Biosphere Reserve of Rioja. We’ll make the first stop in Autol, followed by Quel, and it’s castle. After enjoying the panoramic views we will shoot interesting details of these ecological crops, from orchards, olive groves, scattered vineyards and red rocky cliffs, to the open fields of this mixed landscapes. Here the scenery changes completely, and vineyard crops alternate with others such as almond and olive groves, forming an authentic Mediterranean multi-colored mosaic. We will having lunch in a Prejano restaurant and after lunch we will drive up the Cidacos valley. After having lunch in the small town of Préjano, we’ll look to the upper Cidacos valley towards Enciso and the interesting dinosaur footprints on rocks. This area has very beautiful locations and an attractive landscape with a wide and colorful array of photographic opportunities. In the evening we will prepare for our wonderful Spanish “Farewell Dinner”, with great fun and laughter as we discuss all the highlights of the trip. (B) (D)

Friday (6)  Arnedillo

On day six, we enjoy breakfast and our final group discussion, review our past weeks photos, trade contact information and bid you farewell. We urge you to extend your stay in Spain and make good use of everything you will learn on our photo adventure. Transfers can be arranged to Bilbao and Santander airports.

May all who come as guests... leave as friends®
