Shetland Isles

Wildlife & Landscape Photo Adventure

PAY BALANCEScotland.html

Capture puffin and other wildlife on Scotland’s Shetland Isles.

Shetland Isles Photo Adventure Vacations – Inspire, Create and Learn.

The Shetland Islands in June offers almost 24-hours of daylight, possible whale and dolphin sightings, a strong sense of Viking heritage, spectacular weather, breathtaking landscapes and more than a million breeding seabirds. What more can one ask for?

The Shetland’s – the northern extremity of the British Isles, is a unique experience whether you travel as a regular tourist or with your luggage stuffed with camera gear. The combination of breathtaking landscapes and the abundant wildlife make this archipelago a photographer’s paradise. The archipelago is located on the border between the Atlantic Ocean and the North Sea 110 miles (170 km) north of mainland Scotland. This precarious position is a recipe for dramatic scenery and spectacular weather.

Although this wildlife workshop focuses mainly on seabirds, the Shetland’s surreal landscape is constantly present and practically begging you to shoot it. The workshop will coincide with the height of summer where daylight lasts for almost 24 hours, a million seabirds in large colonies are breeding and feeding their chicks and if we are lucky one might also spot orcas, whales or dolphins.

This adventure is designed not only to guide you to the most photogenic locations carefully planned for the best light, but to aid you in mentally visualizing a scene before capturing the decisive moment. Our aim is to raise your awareness and spark your creativity so that you not only go home with images to be proud of, but use your new found skills to improve and expand your photographic technique in general. Apart from the technical aspect of learning your camera settings and capabilities, you will learn how to turn an ordinary image into an extraordinary image by using your own creativity.

In addition, you will become knowledgeable on how to survey the landscape, utilize and approach your environment, photograph people indigenous to the region and the cultural considerations and challenges of photographing in a foreign country. Our week together will include individual and group discussions, inspiring ideas and great fun. We cannot think of a better location to express your creativity than Scotland and the Shetland Islands.

Sunday (1)  Edinburgh

We meet at our hotel in Edinburgh on Sunday morning, where we will discuss the winning techniques of Wildlife Photography, PWA’s “10 Guiding Principles of Photography” and our “THE ART OF SEEING” photographic technique. During a group lunch, we will have informal discussions on what our guests are trying to achieve in their photography, subject matters, styles and techniques. From here we will set out for a wonderful day of photography throughout Edinburgh. Considered the world’s festival capital and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Edinburgh is the inspiring capital of Scotland, where centuries of history meet a vibrant, cosmopolitan city in an unforgettable setting. We’ll photograph stunning scenery and striking architecture while wandering the charming streets and shops of Edinburgh's New Town. Passing through the popular Princes Street, we will walk around the West End and maybe stop in for a quick snack or coffee where J.K. Rawling first thought up the idea for Harry Potter. On the way back to the hotel, there is an optional walk up to the Scott Monument, just a 200ft climb for views of the city. In the evening we celebrate with our “Welcome Dinner” at one of the local Scottish restaurants. (D)

Monday (2)  Sumburgh - Mousa

On Monday we take an early morning flight to Shetland, which will be our main base for the rest of the tour. After checkin and lunch at the Spiggie Hotel we pay a visit to Sumburgh Head, which is considered to be the most accessible seabird colony in the UK. Puffins and other seabirds are on the “menu” for this afternoon shoot. We return to our hotel for dinner and some rest in preparation for our late night boat trip to the island of Mousa. During the night, one of Shetland’s most spectacular sights is happening. The return at dusk of hundreds of Storm Petrels to their nests in the broch and field walls after a day feeding out at sea. These enigmatic small birds use this half-light to evade predators on their return ashore. The haunting cries of the storm petrels flitting about you as they return to their nests in the broch in an amazing experience. We return to our hotel after midnight. This tour is weather dependent. (B)

Optional: If you rather spend your evening with a pint in the hotel bar or by enjoying a peaceful walk down to loch Spiggie, you are free to do so. Seals frequently visit the beaches and the birdlife in the loch is abundant.

Tuesday (3)  Noss - Eshaness - St Ninian’s Tombola

We begin Tuesday with an early morning boat trip to the island of Noss. Imagine this... 600 feet high cliffs populated by 20,000 gannets, 25,000 guillemots and hundreds of kittiwakes, puffins, razorbills, black guillemots, shags and skuas. Our private chartered boat and experienced skipper will navigate us to this spectacular experience. The boat also boosts a live underwater camera for our use. This boat tour is weather dependent. Afterwards we make our way to Lerwick, the capital of Shetland, for a walk down High Street and a well-deserved lunch. After lunch we drive to the Eshaness cliffs for some spectacular landscape photography. Ancient volcanic rock forms dramatic cliff scenery with stacks, natural arches and blowholes. Bring your ND filters for some dramatic daytime long exposures. Dinner at Spiggie hotel. (B)

Optional: After dinner we take a short drive to St. Ninian’s Isle which is a small tied island connected by the largest active tombolo (sandbar) in the UK. We hope to catch a beautiful sunset over this spectacular site.

Wednesday (4)  Seals - Hermaness

In the morning we head out to photograph seals. Hopefully we will see plenty of seals up on the cliffs basking in the sun. After lunch at Scalloway Hotel we drive to the Hermaness National Nature Reserve on the island of Unst at the most northerly part of mainland Shetland for wildlife and landscape photography.Hermaness National Nature Reserve offers a dramatic cliff-top setting in which to view an incredible array of birdlife. Located about 45 mins walk through grassy moorland from the visitor centre at the old lighthouse shore station, the cliffs are home to an array of nesting seabirds including fulmars, gulls, shags, gannets, puffins and kittiwakes. During the summer months the moorland becomes a carpet of blue as spring squill comes into bloom before turning a deep pink with the arrival of flowering sea pinks. Afterwards we check into Britain’s most northerly hotel, the Baltasound Hotel on island of Unst and enjoy a well-earned rest. Dinner at the hotel.(B)

Thursday (5)  Hermaness

We head out in the early morning for the mighty cliffs of Hermaness. We will spend all day at the cliffs photographing the gannets, the razorbills and all the other seabirds at this spectacular location. If we are very lucky we might also spot orcas or other cetaceans out at sea. We will enjoy our packed lunches al fresco during the day and in the late afternoon we head back to the hotel for our “Farewell Dinner”. An early night is preferred since we have another early morning ahead of us. (B) (D)

Friday (6)  Hermaness - Sumburgh - Edinburgh

During breakfast, we review our past weeks photos and discuss more about post processing. Afterwards, we check-out of our hotel and head out of for our final day together. We approach day six with a casual agenda based on the vibe of the group and the weather. After lunch we spend the day slowly tracking our way back to Sumburgh, leaving Unst and Hermaness behind us. Here we may look to photograph farms and wildlife, as well as pastures and meadows. By late afternoon we’re back in Sumburgh and ready for our return flight to Edinburgh, where we will bid you farewell. (B)

(Those selecting this option will stay in the Shetlands one additional day)

Saturday (7)  Sumburgh - Edinburgh

Early morning (very early) we head out with a local otter expert for an experience of a lifetime. Searching for wild otters on the Shetland shorelines is something else. The exact location will be decided on the day due to winds, tide and other factors. The otter is very shy and sensitive to movement, smells and sounds so it will be somewhat of an adrenaline-filled stalking experience. After 6-8 hours we head back for freshening up and a late lunch at Spiggie Hotel in Sumburgh. Afternoon/Evening flight back to Edinburgh. (B)

May all who come as guests... leave as friends®
