Southwest Utah

Zion & Bryce National Parks, Capitol Reef

Imagine the eye-popping hues that saturate this landscape.

Southwest Utah Photo Adventure Vacations – Inspire, Create and Learn.

Southern Utah is home to some of the most breathtaking scenery found anywhere in the world. Just imagine the eye-popping hues that saturate this landscape. The deep-crimson canyons of Zion National Park, the delicate pink-and-orange minarets at Bryce Canyon, the swirling yellow-white domes of Capitol Reef. This relatively small section of land is so spectacular that it encompasses three national parks.

This adventure will include Capitol Reef as well as Bryce and Zion National Parks. We’ll also be spending time hiking the narrow Calf Creek Falls canyon in the Escalante Grand Staircase National Monument. Each location has its own personality, be it the delicately eroded hoodoos in Bryce or the massive sheer cliffs of Navajo sandstone found in Zion Park. Both offer endless photographic opportunities. In and around Capitol Reef are places like the free standing monoliths in Cathedral Valley or the moonscape terrain found around the Caineville Wash just outside the Park.

This adventure is designed not only to guide you to the most photogenic locations carefully planned for the best light, but to aid you in mentally visualizing a scene before capturing the decisive moment. Our aim is to raise your awareness and spark your creativity so that you not only go home with images to be proud of, but use your new found skills to improve and expand your photographic technique in general. Apart from the technical aspect of learning your camera settings and capabilities, you will learn how to turn an ordinary image into an extraordinary image by using your own creativity.

In addition, you will become knowledgeable on how to survey the landscape, utilize and approach your environment, photograph people indigenous to the region and the cultural considerations and challenges of photographing in a foreign country. Our time together will include individual and group discussions, inspiring ideas and great fun. We cannot think of a better location to express your creativity than the stunning beauty of Bryce and Zion National Parks in Southwest Utah!

Please note: Our photography guide will always be on the look-out for interesting images during our photo adventure and for this reason, our itineraries are always subject to change. Weather plays a major role in capturing the best images possible. Changing light and weather conditions will always be assessed and changes in the schedule will be made accordingly. Flexibility, patience, and a sense of adventure are key to having a great time and capturing stellar photographs.

SPRING: Springtime will offer both perfect temperatures for desert hiking, as well as catching the wildflowers blooming in many of the locations we will visit.

AUTUMN: Along with the intense display of colors from the surrounding red rock formations, we’ll have the brilliance of the autumn foliage changing in Capitol Reef National Park. We’ll cross over Boulder Mountain through massive groves of aspen trees with their white trunks crowned by a spectacular display of yellow leaves.

Saturday (1)  Salt Lake City

We meet at our hotel in the early afternoon for our first lunch together as a group. Afterwards we will go over PWA’s “10 Guiding Principles of Photography” as well as our “THE ART OF SEEING” photographic technique. Afterwards we will have informal discussion on what everyone is trying to achieve in their photography, subject matters, styles and techniques. We then head out to Antelope Island State Park for sunset shoot over the Great Salt Lake. After returning to our hotel we celebrate the journey ahead with a wonderful “Welcoming Dinner”. (D)

Sunday (2)  Wasatch Mountains - Capitol Reef

We checkout of our hotel and head into the local Wasatch Mountains to take advantage of the morning light. The North Fields in the Heber Valley will be our first stop. In the distance towering above the lush green farmland is Mount Timpanogos which will still be covered in snow (spring months). In the meadows we’ll have horses, old barns and perhaps sandhill cranes as possible subjects to photograph.

Leaving the Valley we drive south to Capitol Reef National Park. After checking into our hotel and taking a brief rest, we will visit Capitol Reef, which is only a short distance away. If conditions are right we’ll spend the evening fine tuning your sunset shooting skills, including how to capture the details in the darker regions of the canyons as well as the brilliant colors in the sky. Dinner afterward. (B)

Note: Each night during your adventure we’ll asses the weather conditions and for those interested there may be a late night or very early morning wake up call to head out to do some night sky photography. Timing will be determined by the position of the Milky Way.

Monday (3)  Capitol Reef - Caineville Wash

On Monday we get a very early start with a drive through Capitol Reef to the far eastern side of the Park with our destination for sunrise being a formation called Factory Butte in the Caineville Wash. Grey, stark and lunar at first glance, this location will surprise you with the incredible details, sun baked and cracked earth, brilliant yellow wildflowers and the vast expanse. Depending on road conditions and timing we may drive back into a remote location of the Park called Cathedral Valley. We return to the hotel for lunch and a rest, or a review of your images to date. Later in the day we’ll return to Capitol Reef for sunset at either Panoramic Point or along the Fremont River. (B)

Tuesday (4)  Capitol Reef - Calf Creek Falls - Bryce National Park

We leave Torrey, Utah and Capitol Reef and head south along Highway 12, considered one of the most scenic roads in America. A short distance from Torrey we’ll check out the groves of beautiful aspen trees stopping to photograph along the way. By mid-morning we hope to arrive at the trailhead for a beautiful hike deep within a narrow sandstone canyon in the Escalante Grand Staircase National Monument. At trails end we come to Calf Creek Falls. This is about a 6 mile (9.5 km) round-trip hike with some ups and downs but nothing too strenuous and very little elevation gain. After leaving Calf Creek we make our way to our next destination, Bryce National Park. After resting up from the days hike we head into the Park to Sunrise Point to photograph sunset. It’ll make sense when you get there! After sunset we head back to the hotel for dinner. (B)

Wednesday (5)  Bryce National Park - Zion National Park

We return to Sunrise Point for what else, sunrise! A quick breakfast at Ruby’s Inn then over the rim and into the canyon we hike. Going down is the easy part. It’s the climb back out that’s more difficult as we are at a deceivingly high altitude. The effort is well worth it and we will never be in a rush. Should you decide not to join the hike there’s plenty to see, photograph and enjoy along the rim of the canyon. After lunch we’ll check-out of our hotel and move farther south to Zion National Park. As we drive from the east entrance to the west, we’ll make stops along the way to take in the view and make some photos. At the opposite end of the park is our lodge in Springdale. After checking in we’ll make the short drive back to the Park somewhere along the Virgin River to photograph the sunset illuminating the steep red canyon walls that surround us.  Dinner back at our hotel. (B)

Thursday (6)  Zion National Park

No visit to Zion is complete without venturing deeper into the canyon to where the Virgin River becomes the world famous “Narrows”. A shuttle will take us to the trailhead and if weather and water levels are favorable we’ll hike up the river, yes getting your feet wet along the way. Photographing in these very narrow canyons can be a challenge and we’ll show you the tricks to capturing the stunning scenery before you.

If conditions are not safe to hike up the “Narrows” rest assured there is plenty to see and photograph within the canyon. As always, we’ll assess the conditions and adjust the itinerary accordingly to get you to the best locations for the given light so you have the opportunity to return with spectacular images.

Lunch will be in Springdale and after resting up and or exploring the small town of Springdale. After we’ll return to the Park for the late afternoon light. The high redrock walls streaked by“Indian varnish” seem to glow in the light late in the day and we’ll explore locations along the Virgin River to capture this spectacle. We’ll return to Springdale for our “Farewell Dinner” then retire for much needed and deserved rest. (B) (D)

Friday (7)  Zion National Park - Salt Lake City

Friday will be our final day together. We’ll enjoy a nice breakfast in the town of Springdale. During that time we’ll have a discussion about our trip, answer any questions and trade contact information. After checking out of the hotel we’ll start the drive back to Salt Lake City. This is usually about a 5-6 hour drive so you should be at the hotel by late afternoon. We’ll have just enough time for our final discussion, trade contact information, and bid you farewell. We urge you to extend your stay in Utah and make good use of everything you have learned on our photo adventure. (B)
