DEATH VALLEY

The natural wonders of the North Oregon Coast.

The North Oregon Coast is a treasure for landscape photographers, where it’s still possible to encounter untouched natural beauty that stretches the imagination. Here unique sights of shipwrecks, waterfalls, magical bridges and octopus trees await you, together with dramatic rock formations and exquisite views of the coastline. We will lead you to the best locations to discover all its secrets.

Our 5-day small group photography tour will explore the colorful sea wildlife of the rocky shores, puffins nesting on Haystack Rocks and working harbors along the coast.  We will capture a double waterfall and the Portland Japanese Garden in morning light, the very photogenic St. Johns Bridge and the sunset at Haystack Rock. A visit to the Astoria Bridge – the longest continuous truss bridge in North America – and the Astoria Column will allow us to enjoy the breathtaking view of the mouth of the Columbia River. We will see the giant trees of the coastal old-growth forest after an easy hike to Short Sands Beach and observe harbor scenes against old piers and weathered warehouses.

This adventure is designed not only to guide you to the most photogenic locations carefully planned for the best light, but to aid you in mentally visualizing a scene before capturing the decisive moment. Our aim is to raise your awareness and spark your creativity so that you not only go home with images to be proud of, but use your new found skills to improve and expand your photographic technique in general. Apart from the technical aspect of learning your camera settings and capabilities, you will learn how to turn an ordinary image into an extraordinary image by using your own creativity.

In addition, you will become knowledgeable on how to survey the landscape and best approach the environment. Our time together will include individual and group discussions, inspiring ideas and great fun.

We cannot think of a better location to express your creativity, join us on the stunning Oregon coast.

ITINERARY

OREGON COAST 5 DAY PHOTO TOUR

Day 1 | Portland - Oneonta Gorge - Multnomah Falls

We will begin our adventure in Portland, before heading to Cannon Beach, where you will be captivated by the beauty of Haystack Rocks. We will have our Meet & Greet, then we will head out to photograph the Oneonta Gorge and Multnomah Falls, a double waterfall with a classic stone bridge spanning it. In the evening we will enjoy a wonderful “Welcome Dinner” at one of our favorite restaurants in downtown Portland. (D)

Day 2 | Portland - Cathedral Park - St. John's Bridge - Cannon Beach

We will wake up early to photograph the world renowned Portland Japanese Garden and its famous tree in morning light. We will then visit Keller Fountain Park for some urban action shots, before taking a trip to Cathedral Park to get a shot of the very photogenic St. Johns Bridge. After lunch, we will begin our 2 hour drive to Cannon Beach. After settling in to your room, we’ll have dinner at The Harding Trading Company and then walk to Haystack Rock & Bird Rock to enjoy the the colorful tide pools and watch nesting puffins during the sunset. The large offshore rocks – known as Bird Rocks – north to Chapman Point are home to a dense colony of Common Murres. Bring your long lens or binoculars, as Bird Rock is one of Bald Eagles’ favorite feeding grounds. (B)

Day 3 | Wreck of the Peter Iredale - Astoria Bridge - Astoria Column - Oswald State Park

We will rise early to depart for the Wreck of the Peter Iredale, a four-masted steel barque sailing vessel that ran ashore on the Oregon coast on October 25, 1906 en route to the Columbia River. After breakfast we will photograph the majestic Astoria Bridge – the longest continuous truss bridge in North America – from different locations. We will then visit the Astoria Column to enjoy the breathtaking view of the mouth of the Columbia River. This 125-foot (38 m)-tall column -part of the National Register of Historic Places since 1974 – has a 164-step spiral staircase ascending to an observation deck with sweeping views of the entire area.

Later in the day, we will head to Oswald State Park and get up close and personal with giant trees in this coastal old-growth forest during the easy hike to Short Sands Beach. Here you can photograph the flora and the mushrooms that sprout from the forest floor on your way to the beach, where you’ll find sea stars living in the tidal pools. After dinner, we’ll head back to the Wreck of Peter Iredale at high tide and shoot it while surrounded by water at sunset. (B)
