  SEYMOUR TEMPLAR - Photographer, Leader & GuidePhotographers.html

As much as we enjoy traveling the globe, no location offers as much cultural diversity, access, scale, variety and energy as New York City. It’s truly the capital of the world.  This magnificent island includes such artistic neighborhoods as Tribeca, Soho, Greenwich Village and the East Village; the colorful neighborhoods of Chinatown, the Lower East Side, Nolita, the West Village and Harlem; or the rich history of lower Manhattan and Wall Street.

New York is also home to some of the worlds most iconic landmarks including the Empire State Building, Chrysler Building, Brooklyn Bridge, Times Square, Statue of Liberty and Central Park. We’ve pre-scouted all the best locations and vantage points so you can get the best photos. Join us as we explore this amazing city for the adventure of a lifetime. Manhattan is home to Photo Workshop Adventures, so what better place to teach photography, then in our own beautiful backyard. Join us for another amazing adventure of a lifetime.

This adventure is designed not only to guide you to the most photogenic locations carefully planned for the best light, but to aid you in mentally visualizing a scene before capturing the decisive moment. Our aim is to raise your awareness and spark your creativity so that you not only go home with images to be proud of, but use your new found skills to improve and expand your photographic technique in general. Apart from the technical aspect of learning your camera settings and capabilities, you will learn how to turn an ordinary image into an extraordinary image by using your own creativity.

In addition, you will become knowledgeable on how to survey the landscape, utilize and approach your environment, photograph people indigenous to the region and the cultural considerations and challenges of photographing in a foreign country. Our week together will include individual and group discussions, inspiring ideas and great fun. We cannot think of a better location to express your creativity than the city that never sleeps, New York.

Sunday (1)  Chelsea - West Village

We meet on Sunday morning at a luxury boutique hotel in midtown Manhattan, where we’ll start by discussing PWA’s “10 Guiding Principles of Photography” as well as our “THE ART OF SEEING” photographic technique. During a group lunch, we will have informal discussions on what our guests are trying to achieve in their photography, subject matters, styles and techniques. From here we will set out for an exciting day of photography throughout the island of Manhattan.  In the evening we celebrate with our “Welcome Dinner” at one of Michael’s favorite NYC haunts. (D)

Monday (2)  Financial District - Brooklyn Bridge - Times Square

On Monday we spend the day exploring lower Manhattan, the oldest part of the city. Although New York was discovered by the French in 1524, it was first claimed by the Dutch in 1609. We’ll explore and photograph original architecture dating back to the 1600’s and 1700’s. After lunch we’ll travel by ferry to Brooklyn’s DUMBO neighborhood and walk the Brooklyn Bridge back to Manhattan and then off to explore Chinatown. Later in the evening we will photograph Times Square at night in all its lighted glory. (B)

Tuesday (3)  Grand Central Station - Harlem - Upper West Side

On day three we take the subway through the world famous Grand Central Station and up to Harlem and capture the flavors of this diverse and changing community. Enjoy lunch at our favorite soul food restaurant, and focus on urban street photography. Afterwards we head west to the Upper West Side to photograph some of the most beautiful architecture in New York. (B)

Wednesday (4)  Greenpoint - Williamsburg - Red Hook

On Day four we discover Manhattan by sea, using our all-day ferry pass to explore the many neighborhoods that surround the island of Manhattan. We’ll visit and photograph the neighborhoods of Greenpoint, Williamsburg and Red Hook, Brooklyn, and then hop over to the Hudson River where we’ll visit Hoboken, New Jersey and the Statue of Liberty. Photographing from the water will give us opportunities for many unique and beautiful photos. (B)

Thursday (5)  Tribeca - Soho - Chinatown - Greenwich Village

On Thursday we take the subway to ground zero where construction is ongoing to rebuild the World Trade Center buildings. Afterwards, we will concentrate on the colorful neighborhoods that lie to the north including Tribeca, Soho, Greenwich Village, the West Village, Chelsea and the Meatpacking District. In the evening, we’ll celebrate our “Farewell Dinner” at Michael’s favorite NYC Restaurant, a very special and hidden Italian gem in lower Manhattan. We’ll enjoy great fun and laughter as we discuss all the highlights of the trip. (B) (D)

Friday (6)  Chelsea

On day six, we awake to our final group discussion, review our past weeks photos, trade contact information and bid you farewell. We urge you to extend your stay in New York or elsewhere in United States and make good use of everything you will learn on our photo adventure. (B)

Seymour Templar is a recognized photographer, widely published online and in various magazines. Complex.com selected him in 2012 as one of the “50 Greatest Street Photographers Right Now.”

Born in Belgium, Seymour Templar studied Fine Arts in Brussels, and has lived in New York City since 1992. In the Nineties a growing mistrust in the blatant commercialism of the art market led to a change in his career path. He began working as a product and furniture designer. However, his longing for a more rewarding field of research led him to pick up a camera, and he later on decided to pursue photography as a means for artistic research.

Bas Brinkman recently noted, “The photography of Mr. Templar presents itself to me just like a good script does. I do not have the feeling that things happen because of some plot but because of what people do. With this particular project [Social Lights], he helps me seeing humanity in staring at a screen. He is tender, gentle and lets his subjects slowly tell a story. I think that is quite an accomplishment.”

Michael is the Founder and CEO of Photo Workshop Adventures. Born in Brooklyn and raised on Long Island, Michael began taking photos and developing prints in his basement darkroom at the age of 11. Using his fathers Argus C-3, he learned the technical aspects of photography at an early age.

This early love of imagery influenced his other creative skills as an artist, musician, designer and visionary. As a photographer, Michael quickly grew to master the art of photography, including landscape, architecture, people, fashion and motorsports. With a degree in Advertising and Design, Michael launched his first advertising agency in 1982 and soon realizing the creative potential within the world of marketing and design. Always embracing technology, in 1996 he launched Icon Digital, New York’s first digital photography studio.

In 2000 Michael turned his focus to photography, travel and various creative projects. As digital camera technology advanced and a global interest in photography increased, he looked for ways to harness this momentum. So in 2008, while photographing on the Adriatic coast of Croatia, “Photo Workshop Adventures” was born.

When Michael isn’t running a photo adventure, he can be found at PWA’s basecamp in New York.
