Manhattan is our home turf and the perfect place to hold

photography workshops including weekend workshops and photo safari tours. As much as we enjoy traveling the globe, no location offers as much cultural diversity, access, scale, variety and energy as New York City. It’s truly the capital of the world. This magnificent island includes such artistic neighborhoods as Tribeca, Greenwich Village, Soho, and the East Village. The colorful neighborhoods of Chinatown, the Lower East Side, Nolita, and the West Village. Or the rich history of lower Manhattan and Wall Street. New York is also home to some of the worlds most iconic landmarks including the Empire State Building, Chrysler Building, Brooklyn Bridge, Times Square, Statue of Liberty and Central Park. We’ve pre-scouted all the best locations and vantage points so you can get the best photos. Join us as we explore this amazing city for the adventure of a lifetime.

SATURDAY & SUNDAY PHOTO WORKSHOPS

We call these our “Inspirational Photo Workshops”. Spend a day or the weekend immersing yourself in photography and experiencing New York like never before. For the beginner, advanced amateur or semi-pro looking for guidance and access to great locations. We start our day discussing PWA’s 10 Guiding Principles to help you learn the difference between “just taking a photograph” and capturing that “great shot”, with a strong emphasis on being “creative”. We don’t give lectures, but instead discuss while we walk and photograph. Lunch is included and an opportunity to rest and recharge. In the afternoon we discuss composition, light, technique and style, and how to be more creative without using your program mode, as well as some of the technical aspects of using digital equipment and how to make the most of this amazing technology.

Both our Saturday and Sunday workshops start at 10 AM and end around 4 PM. We explore several neighborhoods throughout the day which may include lower Manhattan, Brooklyn and midtown Manhattan. Lunch is included. You can also combine Saturday and Sunday for a reduced weekend package price. See below.

6 DAY NEW YORK CITY PHOTO WORKSHOP

This workshop is designed, not only to guide you to the most photogenic locations carefully planned for the best light, but to aid you in mentally visualizing a scene before capturing the decisive moment. Our aim is to raise your awareness and spark your creativity so that you not only go home with images to be proud of, but use your new found skills to improve and expand your photographic technique in general. Apart from the technical aspect of learning your camera settings and capabilities, you will learn how to turn an ordinary image into an extraordinary image by using your own creativity, with our assistance. In addition, you will become knowledgeable on how to survey the landscape, utilize and approach your environment, photograph people and the cultural considerations and challenges of photographing in different ethnic neighborhoods. And no photographic workshop would be complete without discussing workflow and the editing process. Our week together will include individual and group reviews, personal assignments and great fun. We cannot think of a better location to express that creativity than the city that never sleeps, New York.

NEW YORK CITY ITINERARY

Sunday:  We meet on Sunday morning at our luxury boutique hotel in New York City , where we’ll start by discussing PWA’s “10 Guiding Principles of Photography”. During a group lunch, we will have informal discussions on what our guests are trying to achieve in their photography, subject matters, styles and techniques. From here we will set out for an exciting day of photography throughout the island of Manhattan.  In the evening we celebrate with our “Welcome Dinner” at one of Michael’s favorite NYC haunts.

Monday:  On Monday we spend the day exploring lower Manhattan, the oldest part of the city. Although New York was discovered by the French in 1524, it was first claimed by the Dutch in 1609. We’ll explore and photograph original architecture dating back to the 1600’s and 1700’s. After lunch we’ll travel by ferry to Brooklyn’s DUMBO neighborhood and walk the Brooklyn Bridge back to Manhattan and then off to explore Chinatown. Later in the evening we will photograph Times Square at night in all its lighted glory.

Tuesday:  On day three we take the subway up to Harlem and capture the flavors of this diverse and changing community. Enjoy lunch at our favorite soul food restaurant, and focus on urban street photography. Afterwards we head west to the Upper West Side to photograph some of the most beautiful architecture in New York.

Wednesday:  On Day four we discover Manhattan by sea, using our all-day ferry pass to explore the many neighborhoods that surround the island of Manhattan. We’ll visit and photograph the neighborhoods of Greenpoint, Williamsburg and Red Hook, Brooklyn, and then hop over to the Hudson River where we’ll visit Hoboken, New Jersey and the Statue of Liberty. Photographing from the water will give us opportunities for many unique and beautiful photos.

Thursday:  On Thursday we take the subway to ground zero where construction is ongoing to rebuild the World Trade Center buildings. Afterwards, we will concentrate on the colorful neighborhoods that lie to the north including Tribeca, Soho, Greenwich Village, the West Village, Chelsea and the Meatpacking District. In the evening, we’ll celebrate our “Farewell Dinner” at Michael’s favorite NYC Restaurant, a very special and hidden Italian gem in lower Manhattan. We’ll enjoy great fun and laughter as we discuss all the highlights of the trip.

Friday:  On day six, we awake to our final group discussion, review our past weeks photos, trade contact information and bid you farewell. We urge you to extend your stay in New York or elsewhere in United States and make good use of everything you will learn on our Photo Workshop Adventure.

MICHAEL CHINNICI

Professional Photographer, Instructor & Guide

Michael is the Founder and CEO of Photo Workshop Adventures.

Born in Brooklyn and raised on Long Island, Michael began taking photos and developing B&W prints in his darkroom at the age of 11. Using his fathers post WWII Argus rangefinder, he learned all the technical aspects of photography at an early age.

This early love of imagery influenced his other creative skills as a painter, musician, designer and visionary. As a photographer, Michael quickly grew to master the art of photography, including landscape, architecture, people, fashion, motorsports and still life.

With a degree in Advertising and Design, Michael launched his first advertising agency “Chinnici Direct” in 1982, soon realizing the creative potential within the world of marketing and design.

In the 90‘s, Michael started traveling more extensively and shooting with his Nikon’s, Hasselblad’s and a Linhof 6x17. Always a visionary, in 1996 he launched NYC’s first digital photography studio, “Icon Digital”, and for 12 years, the studio shot for such clients as JP Morgan Chase, Clinique, Estee Lauder, L’oreal, Hewlett Packard, Lacoste, Tommy Hilfiger, Smithsonian, Vivre and more.

In 2000, Michael sold the ad agency and focused more on photography, travel and special creative projects. As technology advanced and DSLR camera became more mainstream, he looked for ways to blend together his photography, travel, marketing and technology experience. So in 2008, “Photo Workshop Adventures” was born as he photographed on the adriatic coast of Croatia.

When Michael isn’t teaching photography workshops around the world, he can be found in New York City at his creative shop, Red Octopus or at his photography studio.
