Experience stunning landscapes by day, and breathtaking nightscapes by night.

Did you know that 80% of the people cannot see the stars anymore, and have never seen them in all their beauty? Light pollution is a huge problem in our modern world, affecting our ability to see the world at night.

Our 8-day Dolomites Milky Way Photo Tour and Landscape Adventure offers you the opportunity to truly experience an adventure of a lifetime while learning the secrets of taking stunning photos of the Milky Way. The Dolomites, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, offers stunning landscapes by day, and breathtaking nightscapes by night. Sparkling stars over the white jagged rocks are an unforgettable sight to see. Of course, we will also take beautiful sunset and sunrise photos.

What makes the Dolomite mountains so unique is how its fabulous vertical reefs glow in the changing light and present a startling and dramatic contrast to the pastoral beauty beneath. The region’s early morning and late afternoon light paint stunning sun-drenched vistas that are magical and captivating and a photographer’s dream.

Comprising over 90,000 acres of mountainous terrain, the Italian Dolomites offer a unique corner of the Alps with distinctive geology and a fascinating blend of cultures. The geological origin dates back some 230 million years when the rock was deposited in the form of marine sediments and coral in a low open sea (that’s why you can find fossilized shells and marine remains along the paths of these mountains). This material formed the base of the mountains. Much later, around 65 million years ago, the rocks were lifted high up by various tectonic events, and the Alps came into existence.

The Dolomites are notable for their composition of pale-colored dolomite — a limestone-like rock formed beneath deep, ancient seas — atop darker volcanic bedding. Our adventure will begin in a valley known as Selva de Val Gardena, in the western Dolomite mountains surrounded by these limestone formations.

This adventure is designed not only to guide you to the most photogenic locations carefully planned for the best light, but to aid you in mentally visualizing a scene before capturing the decisive moment. Our aim is to raise your awareness and spark your creativity so that you not only go home with images to be proud of, but use your new found skills to improve and expand your photographic technique in general. Apart from the technical aspect of learning your camera settings and capabilities, you will learn how to turn an ordinary image into an extraordinary image by using your own creativity.

In addition, you will become knowledgeable on how to survey the landscape, utilize and approach your environment, photograph people indigenous to the region and the cultural considerations and challenges of photographing in a foreign country. Our time together will include individual and group discussions, inspiring ideas and great fun. The Dolomite Mountains are the perfect backdrop for this Milky Way Photo Adventure consisting of astro, landscape and nature photography. Join us for an adventure of a lifetime.

UPCOMING WORKSHOPS

DOLOMITES + MILY WAY  8 DAYS

Day 1 | Ortisei - Selva de Val Gardena - Val di Funes - St. Johann

We meet in the lobby of our hotel at 11 AM, where we will discuss PWA’s “10 Guiding Principles to Great Photography” as well as our “THE ART OF SEEING” photographic technique. We will dive right into night photography and learn everything about camera settings and focus for our first night out. During our Welcome Lunch, we will get to know each other, and have informal discussions on what our guests are trying to achieve in their photography, subject matters, styles and techniques.

In the afternoon, we will travel to our first destination called Val di Funes, where you can find the picturesque church of St. Johann (the little church), which stands out in front of the famous mountain formation called Geißlerspitzen. Hopefully, with luck you will capture your first Alpenglow. And hopefully we will have our first clear night to see the Milky Way arc over these beautiful mountains! (D)

Day 2 | Sella Ronda - Sass Pordoi - Lago di Carezza

Today we are up early to capture the sunrise on top of one of the Dolomites’ famous mountain passes, Sella Ronda. This is a unique round of four mountain passes, The Sella, the Campolongo, the Pordoi and the Passo Gardena. After breakfast, we will explore this landscape of rocks, green fields, and little wooden houses. After lunch, we will attempt our first mountain top by cable car. The Sass Pordoi is 9678 ft (2950 m) above sea level and is also called the “Terazzel Del Dolomiti” due to its amazing view of all the surrounding mountain peaks.

In the afternoon we will take some time to relax and get some sleep and then after dinner we will explore the first blue jewel of the Dolomites, Lago di Carezza. When surrounded by clouds, this mirror lake provides a perfect reflection of the famous Latemar rock formation. If there is a clear sky at night, and time permits, we can always return for a Milky Way shot. (B)

Day 3 | Alpe di Suisi - Wuhner Weiher

In the morning we visit the Alpe di Siusi National Park, which is the largest high altitude Alpine meadow in Europe. Located in Italy’s South Tyrol province in the Dolomites mountain range, it is a major tourist attraction. We will do a photo walk through the green grass pastures surrounded by beautiful mountain peaks.

In the afternoon we take some rest before our evening hike to a little lake which makes a perfect mirror image of “Dwarf King Laurin’s Garden of Roses”. Legend has it that the captured King destroyed his rose garden forever: neither the bright day nor the dark night should ever again see the magnificence of his roses. Only barren, pale rocks should remain. However, Laurin forgot to include the twilight between day and night in his curse. So sometimes, just before sunset, the pale mountains are illuminated with a blaze of red light resembling his lost rose garden.

If the weather allows, we will stay here for an evening picnic and then wait for the Milky Way after sunset. (B)

Day 4 | Parc Naturale Tre Cime

Today, we check out of our hotel and set out to explore the most famous destination of the Dolomites, the Parc Naturale Tre Cime. This world of stone is dominated by the unique three peaks standing together. Their steep famous north face attracts climbers from all over the world. We will hike for about 1.5 hours to the famous Mountain Hood Locatelli where we can relax for the afternoon beside the Böden lakes.

We will sleep in the mountain hood where we will share a large room. It is comfortable and fun, and the food is wonderful. When all the tourists leave we will have the Dolomites all to ourselves. We just have to walk out the door to see the Milky Way over the peaks (when the sky is clear), and watch the sunrise from the terrace. We’ll spend part of the night photographing the Milky Way and of course the sunrise. (B) (D)

Day 5 | Rifugio Lagazuoi

After leaving the Tre Cime after sunrise and breakfast, we will drive to our highest point of this adventure and sleep at almost 9600 ft (3000 m), where a cable car will take us. The panoramic view is gorgeous and there is a lot to explore, as this mountain is full of caves, used by soldiers in World War I to hide from their enemy. The mountain took a lot of lives in the winter and was the main front between the Austrian and Italian armies.

In the evening we will have a delicious homemade dinner. Afterward you may also experience the highest sauna in the Alps. The sunset (and hopefully a clear night) will be unforgettable! (B) (D)

Day 6 | Plätzwiese - Strudelkopf

After sunrise and a good breakfast, we will travel to the Plätzwiese, a place of meadows and rocks without cars. We will have to hike for about 1 hour to our hotel, beautifully situated among the lush green grass. We will relax in the afternoon and after dinner hike about 1.5 hours to the peak of the Strudelkopf. Standing near its large summit cross, you will have a spectacular panorama of mountain peaks, including the Tre Cime. We will photograph the sunset and wait for the Milky Way afterward. (B) (D)

Day 7 | Lago di Braies

Our last day full day together will be spent at Lago die Braies, which is famous for its crystal clear turquoise water and its wooden boathouse and boats. We will sleep today at the famous lake hotel, which is very old and has been in many movies.

The afternoon will be spent going through our photos and learning how to process night photos in Lightroom. The sunset can be taken from our terrace after our wonderful Farewell Dinner with great fun and laughter. Weather permitting we will have one more go at the Milky Way before heading to bed. (B) (D)

Day 8 | Lago di Braies - Ortisei

On our final day, we awake early for our last sunrise photo session. During breakfast we will have our final group discussion, review our past week’s photos, trade contact information, head to Ortisei and bid you farewell.

We urge you to extend your stay in Italy and make good use of everything you will learn on our photo adventure. (B)

(B) Breakfast, (L) Lunch, (D) Dinner, (E) Excursion
